Essential Guide for IELTS Test Report Form (TRF)

Finished your IELTS test? Wonderful, but your journey doesn't end here.

The real work begins with your Test Report Form (TRF). This document contains your IELTS scores and serves as the official scorecard that overseas universities will require. Without it, institutions will not review your application.

Indeed, your process is only getting started.

Your TRF includes numerous critical details for your university applications. From its expiration period to the number of institutions you can contact for free and the expenses for extra copies, there is essential information you cannot overlook.

This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to understand about your TRF.

Core Highlights:

  • Your TRF remains valid for 2 years and features detailed scores alongside candidate particulars.
  • Within India, you receive 1 complimentary physical TRF copy and can forward scores to 5 universities at no charge.
  • Scores are dispatched via postal mail or digital transmission, with electronic delivery proving quicker and more affordable.
  • Extra TRFs are priced at INR 250 per institution for electronic transfer or INR 1500 per institution for courier delivery.
  • Electronic TRFs can be retrieved digitally through the IDP IELTS portal.

What is the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF)?

The expression TRF (Test Report Form) should sound familiar. If not, there is no need for concern! This document represents your official IELTS result record, validating your grade in physical format. Every applicant is provided only one IELTS TRF.

Your IELTS TRF document incorporates the following specifics:

  • Examination Category: Academic or General Training
  • Test Center Number
  • Examination Date
  • Applicant Number
  • Candidate Particulars, including Surname, Given Name, and Candidate ID
  • Personal Information such as Birth Date, Sex, Scheme Code, Nation, and Native Tongue
  • Test Outcomes: The TRF displays your individual IELTS band scores for the Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking modules, together with your Overall Band Score and corresponding CEFR Level.
  • IELTS TRF Code: Displayed in the bottom right section

The TRF remains active for two years from the result issuance date, which is normally indicated on the document. For instance, your TRF stays valid and usable until August 1st, 2027, if your scores are released on August 1st, 2025. Should you need to retake the IELTS exam for any related paperwork past this timeframe, you will be required to do so.

Additionally, you will likely need to collect your TRF paperwork in person or arrange for its delivery. In India, you are allowed to submit your exam results to 5 academic institutions within one month of the test date, and you will obtain a complimentary physical copy of your Test Report Form (TRF) at your designated address. These scores are dispatched to the universities via courier, standard mail, email, or international post.

Subsequently, dispatching any Additional Test Report Forms (ATRFs) digitally will incur a processing charge of INR 250 per university.

How to send the IELTS TRF Scorecard to universities?

As stated previously, you can transmit your TRF to the five chosen universities through two distinct approaches: via postal service or digitally.

The majority of universities demand an official physical copy of your IELTS TRF document; nonetheless, it is wise to verify each institution's preferred method for obtaining IELTS scores, given that certain places accept digital submissions, which can save time and expenses.

Dispatch your IELTS score to academic institutions via post

To transmit your IELTS scores to universities through postal mail, you must apply for Additional Test Report Forms (ATRFs) to be mailed straight to the institutions. To initiate this service, input the relevant university mailing addresses into your portal while signing up for the IELTS. You are permitted to dispatch up to five extra copies of your TRF directly to your target universities without incurring any charges.

Processing durations for ATRF applications generally span 7 to 10 business days following payment completion; therefore, it is prudent to prepare accordingly.

Dispatch your IELTS score to academic institutions digitally

To transmit your IELTS scores to universities electronically, you must access the portal and locate the area dedicated to score submissions. Input the information for your chosen universities and select the digital delivery choice. Following the entry of necessary details, finalize your submission. The IELTS organization will then forward your electronic Test Report Form (eTRF) straight to the designated universities.

Simple!

When you hold an eTRF, you are also permitted to email it directly to the universities you are applying to. There are no restrictions on how frequently you can complete this action as long as your eTRF bears a date within the past two years.

On certain occasions, a university might accept a digital scan of your physical Test Report Form. If permitted, you can scan the paperwork and upload it as a PDF file.

When do we need Additional TRFs (ATRF)?

During your IELTS registration, you can designate up to five universities to receive your scores digitally at zero cost. If you require score distribution to additional institutions, you must submit an application for an Additional Test Report Form (ATRF).

Additional electronic ATRFs are priced at ₹250 for each university and must be requested after a day. Since IDP exclusively processes ATRF requests online, offline submissions are no longer permitted. To initiate the request, access your IELTS Candidate Portal, click on the Add TRF feature, and provide the destination university information.

How Long Does It Take To Send IELTS Scores To Universities?

Electronic score delivery to academic institutions generally requires approximately 5 business days, while postal delivery of physical scorecards usually takes 5 to 10 business days. Universities require a Test Report Form, which serves as your official IELTS result document, for score submission. Your TRF will be available within 13 days following your test date.

Should you prefer to collect your TRF personally from the closest IDP IELTS branch following the announcement of results, you must present the same identification document that was utilized during registration.
